Medical Director
Pets deserve the same standard of medicine in every hospital they enter. This role exists to make that true: you set the clinical bar, coach the doctors who deliver it, and turn quality into outcomes clients can feel and teams can sustain. You will not manage a spreadsheet of policies. You will raise the practice of veterinary medicine across a growing network of animal hospitals.
Performance Objectives
- Publish and maintain evidence-based protocols for wellness, diagnostics, surgery, and emergency stabilization so care is consistent from hospital to hospital.
- Coach associate veterinarians until case management, surgical judgment, and client communication meet defined standards within their first year.
- Run a peer-review and complication process that identifies preventable harm and closes each gap with a documented practice change.
- Partner with hospital leaders to match doctor capacity to demand without trading away appointment time, surgical quality, or technician support.
- Build mentorship and continuing education that increase in-house case complexity, clinical confidence, and doctor retention.
- Align pharmacy, laboratory, anesthesia, and referral pathways so preventive care and treatment follow one medical standard.
- Report clinical quality indicators to executive leadership each cycle and act on the gaps those numbers reveal.
Environment & Resources
You report to senior veterinary leadership and work beside hospital managers who own operations, staffing, and the client experience. You influence a distributed team of veterinarians, technicians, and hospital medical leads. You will have practice-management and medical-record systems, a protocol library, a continuing-education budget, and the authority to set clinical standards. The setting is a growth-stage, multi-hospital veterinary group focused on medicine, surgery, wellness, and preventive care.
Essential Qualifications
- DVM or VMD with license eligibility; board certification or equivalent advanced clinical leadership strongly preferred.
- A record of leading veterinarians in a multi-doctor or multi-site practice, with outcomes you can describe.
- Experience writing medical protocols that change how cases are handled, not just how they are documented.
- Skill coaching through case review, difficult clinical conversations, and client-experience failures.
- Working fluency with veterinary practice-management and medical-record systems and with quality metrics.
Why This Role
- Your clinical judgment scales beyond one exam room to an entire hospital network.
- You own the medical standard; operators own the business, so you are not asked to be both.
- Medicine, surgery, and preventive care are the product—not a side effect of volume.
- Medical leadership is a defined path, with doctors and technicians who want a higher standard.
